Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away. Matthew 24:35 CSB
These times are so incredibly fickle, the culture’s moving target of ‘facts’ and what ‘truth‘ is is always changing. It’s all over the place. Moral relativism applauds this thinking also: my truth is my truth, your truth is your truth. That’s a dangerous and shakey place to stand. That puts mankind in the position of God by defining what the standard of truth is. We don’t have that right, and I think human history has proven that we shouldn’t have that right. We need something rock solid in these times that are so uncertain. Here are four reflections on Matthew 24:35:
- There is concrete truth and this shakey time. We’ve already covered this in previous articles, but God’s Word is the standard and objective truth that never changes and guides us. It hasn’t changed over time (this concept is debated in the secular realm but is constantly being overthrown- with the exception of being translated into other languages) and provides cross-culture, time-transcendent truth for us today.
- It provides us with the truth to be able to speak to others in their shakey times. It gives us a standard of truth to be able to relate with, provide comfort with, and counsel others during times of uncertainty. We all need to be redirected and recentered on who God is and what truth is. The world is constantly battling to satisfy us with things that are completely unsatisfactory. We need something that is concrete. If we’re put in concentration camps over our faith, what Facebook or Twitter tells us what truth is isn’t going to cut it. We need something divine to comfort and console us…
- It reveals the plan for history. Through our previous study in Biblical Theology, we see where human history has been and where it is going. There are patterns revealed all through the Bible. This gives enormous comfort to me that this world is going to pan out exactly how God said it would because His Word has never failed before.
- It shows us who God really is. God’s Word reveals to us who He is and His communicable attributes. The study of Theology Proper has been one of the most life-changing things in my entire life. We should strive to learn as much as we can about who God is because that’s what you do in a relationship. I love my wife Tensley, and I’ll never be done fully learning who she is, what makes her tick. That’s what a loving relationship is, and that’s how we should view our relationship with an infinite God as well.
